Silverton FEAST

This year the Marion-Polk Food Share is conducting a community food assessment, focusing on areas outside of Salem. The goal of the community food assessment is to bring people together to talk about their food system and to empower communities to build a healthier and more sustainable food system with a specific focus on rural areas in Marion and Polk Counties. At the heart of a community food assessment is F.E.A.S.T. (Food-Education-Agriculture-Solutions-Together), which involves facilitated discussions about the role food and agricultural resources play in communities. F.E.A.S.T. is a community organizing event that focuses on learning about local food efforts and creating opportunities for action. The all-day F.E.A.S.T. events are open to the whole community and it includes a meal featuring local foods. This work has been spearheaded by Oregon Food Bank and has happened across Oregon since 2008. The conversations started in FEAST events have connected rural school districts with local farmers, created new relationships with local growers/farmers, established new backyard gardens and farmer's markets, and generated new mechanisms for emergency food delivery. The Silverton Grange and Rooted in Food have been working together to assist the Marion-Polk Food Share in organizing a Silverton F.E.A.S.T. The Silverton F.E.A.S.T. will happen on Saturday, January 24th from 9-3 pm at the Silverton Grange.
