The first Artist-in-Residence in the history of Oregon Parks and Recreation will reveal nineteen original oil paintings installed in the South Falls Lodge located in the Historic District at Silver Falls State Park. The reception and slide presentation is Father’s Day, June 21, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Neal Yasami, the artist known as “Peace,” painted the nineteen works to document the ten major waterfalls and other points of interest in the park. All the frames used for the paintings were hand hewn by Peace from former park signs. Peace up-cycled the redwood and cedar of former signs to “pay homage to the 9,000 acre park of waterfalls and trees.” Peace will be returning to Silver Falls State Park in the fall of 2015 to complete ten major works for the Silver Falls Lodge & Conference Center.
Peace lives in Eugene, Oregon. He is a graduate of Grant High School in Portland, the University of Hawaii, and the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco. Peace’s formal training was in drawing, painting, and sculpture at the Academy of Arts University where he received his Master’s of Fine Art degree. Peace has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. He acquired the technical mastery required to complete these paintings during his sabbaticals in Germany, France, and Italy.
Silver Falls State Park is located on OR-214 about 16 miles southeast of Silverton. Admission to event activities is free. A day-use parking permit is required to park at Silver Falls; visitors can purchase a one-day permit for $5.00 or an annual permit for $30.00.
