The Silverton Police Department is proud to bring back the Bicycle Safety Fair to educate Silverton’s youth about the importance of bicycle and traffic safety. The Silver Falls School District is a co-sponsor of the event by providing the use of the covered playground area at Eugene Field Elementary School. The Safety Fair will start immediately following the Homer Davenport Parade on Saturday, August 8, 2015. The hours will be 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Officers and volunteers will give safety talks, brief demonstrations, and encouraging instruction to lead new riders through a bicycle safety education course. By participating, all youth will receive a certificate of completion for the program.
This is a rain or shine event and will be fun and educational for all youth and their parents or guardians. Please bring your children with their bicycles and all protective gear you want them to wear. A properly fitted helmet for all participants is mandatory. Parents will be required to fill out a liability release form prior to participation in the event by the children.
Silverton Police have also started a free and voluntary bicycle registration program. While at the Safety Fair you will be able to register any bicycle with the police department, and have the information stored in our data base, in the event the bike is ever lost or stolen. Anyone can pre-register their bicycles at any time by picking up a bicycle registration form, filling it out and returning it to the police department.
The Police Department and the Silverton Kiwanis are also collecting donations to purchase helmets for children that don’t have them. Protecting children and providing safety equipment is of most importance to us. Several donors have already contributed to the fund, and we have funds totaling $500.00 on our way to our goal of $1,200.00. The goal amount will allow us to purchase about 200 helmets at the bulk rate. If you or your organization would like to contribute to this worthy cause, please donate to Silverton Kiwanis and reference “bicycle safety.”
