Oregon Garden Offers Conifer Workshop with Mary Anne Payne
The Oregon Garden’s popular Garden University program will feature a class on conifers with expert Mary Anne Payne on Saturday, October 18, from 10 a.m. until noon at the education building near the Garden visitor center. Payne is the executive director of the Coast Botanical Gardens, 47 acres that run from Highway One to the Pacific Ocean located about eight miles north of the town of Mendocino in Northern California.
Payne has an extensive background in educational management and fundraising and is a self-confessed plant geek. She will provide a pictorial review of the Gardens and will discuss plans for a Dwarf Conifer Garden inspired by the Conifer Garden at The Oregon Garden.
The second half of the program will feature a travelogue with Sam Pratt who recently toured Europe in search of new conifer varieties.
Following the program, attendees may enter the Garden and explore the centerpiece Conifer Garden with its more than 500 cultivars from around the world. Conifer Garden volunteer Doug Wilson will be on hand to answer questions. The Conifer Garden at The Oregon Garden is the reference garden for the American Conifer Society.
Garden members who register in advance are admitted free to the class and Garden. The public is invited to attend; tickets are $12, which includes Garden admission. Refreshments and door prizes are included. Register online at http://www.oregongarden.org/programs/garden-university/.
