Lecture will offer help on caring for those with dementia
One of the most heartbreaking things in life is having a loved one who is physically present but increasingly absent mentally. And, gradually less able to care for themselves, they require help. And that means tough choices.
“Help is Here! What You Need to Know When Family or Friends Have Dementia” is the subject for the upcoming 23rd annual Sister Marilyn Schwab Memorial Lecture, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm on June 27, 2019, at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center, 540 S Main St, in Mt. Angel
This FREE presentation by Marian O. Hodges, MD, MPH and Anne P. Hill, JD, is designed to offer help to family members, friends or caregivers for persons impacted by dementia. The presenters are co-authors of several books on dementia, including Help is Here: When someone you love has dementia. Books are available at: www.dementiahelpishere.org.
One in 10 people age 65 or older has Alzheimer’s dementia, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. It is, therefore, a subject that impacts ethics in business, families in a host of ways, a person’s freedom to handle his/her own finances, and ultimately touches every one of us by way of people we know. None, though, are impacted like family and caregivers in direct regular contact with people in various stages of dementia. The stress and emotion can take a toll. And that’s why the Lecture Planning Committee selected this topic for the 2019 Lecture. The Lecture is provided as a free gift to the community by the Benedictine Sisters of Mt. Angel and by Providence Benedictine Nursing Center.
Marian O. Hodges, MD, MPH is the Regional Medical Director of Senior Health Program for Providence – Oregon. She graduated from Dartmouth College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and also holds a master’s degree in public health and medical ethics from the University of Washington. Anne P. Hill, JD, a retired lawyer, is the author of Unforgettable Journey: Tips to Survive Your Parent’s Alzheimer’s Disease, a member of the State Plan for Alzheimer’s Disease in Oregon (SPADO) and a frequent speaker on the topic of dementia in families.
